Dimapur, Oct. 21 (EMN): The press information bureau (defence wing) has stated that an alert and agile troops of Assam Rifles thwarted an attack on a company operating base in Chen area of Mon district in Nagaland near Indo-Myanmar border on the night of October 20 carried out by “some insurgents of NSCN-K (YA)”.
An update from Lt Col Sumit Sharma, PRO (defence) informed that the attempt to derail the ongoing Naga Peace Process that is in final stages was thwarted with quick retaliation from the Assam Rifles.
“The insurgents ran away after coming under immediate an accurate fire from the Assam Rifles post. Extensive search and domination operations have been launched in the area,” read the statement.
“The action of NSCN-K (YA) is fallout of their desperation due to wanting influence of violence in the state and apprehension of top leaders like SS Maj Gen Yanghang alias Mopa and SS Kilonser Imti Ao, thereby severely degrading the extortion and forced recruitment by the faction,” it added.
The Army Commander Eastern Command and GOC Spear Corps lauded the troops for their alertness, quick response and resolve to ensure peace and stability in Nagaland.
It may be mentioned that crossfire between the Assam Rifles personnel and unidentified gunmen took place at Chen Loisho village in Mon district at around 2:15 am on Sunday. Two civilians were reported to have sustained minor injuries from stray bullets.
Chen Loisho Village Council condemns
The Chen Loisho Village Council has strongly condemned the attack on the 40 AR 'D' Company Camp at Chen Loisho Village in Mon district in the wee hours of October 20. It lamented such incident happenings amidst the ongoing peace process and the final solution to the Nagas.
The Council further stated that “such kind of incident is condemned and looked down upon by the Nagas and hope that peace prevail (sic)”.
Students slam firing incident
Chen Area Students' Union has condemned the firing incident that took place at Chenloisho village army camp on October 20, stating that it had “instilled a state of fear and insecurity to the general public.” The union has urged the individuals and groups responsible to refrain from committing such acts and wished speedy recovery to the injured civilians as well as shared unhappiness for the loss of property.
