DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 5: Troops of 44 Assam Rifles under the aegis of Headquarters 7 Sector Assam Rifles honoured a WW-II veteran Retired Havildar (General Duty), Mering Ao, which was presented by Col BN Nayak at Sungratsu village in the presence of the village council and other villagers and also paid homage to martyrs from Mokokchung district.
Col B N Nayak warranted special attention as the 96 year old veteran, who was enlisted in the 3rdAssam Rifles in 1941 as a sepoy in Mokokchung, had actively taken part in the Burma campaign of the then British Indian Army.
AR statement said the veteran was part of ‘Victoria Force’ which marched till Irawaddy River in Myanmar in 1942 and fought the Japanese forces along the river banks. The WW-II veteran is also the recipient of gallantry award Ashoka Chakra (Class-III).
The troops also paid homage to the martyrs from Mokokchung district in the school from where the martyrs had studied. Parents of martyrs along with school teachers and students attended the ceremony. Homage was paid to late Chubatemsu of Mangkolemba Baptish Higher Secondary School, late Nokzar of Mayangnokcha Higher Secondary School and late Martoba of Molungkimong Middle School.
