DIMAPUR, JUN 4
Deft handling of a mob-like situation and pacifying of the unruly crowd by the 31 Assam Rifles prevented a volatile situation at Khensa village from getting out of control, if not it could have resulted into an untoward incident.
After receiving information that some underground cadres were detained while carrying out illegal activities at Khensa village on June 3 at around 5:30 in the evening, the 7 sector Assam Rifles immediately launched a Task Force to the spot.
On arrival, the AR personnel found that Khensa Students Council members had detained five NSCN (IM) cadres and two suspected NSCN (K) cadres who were kept at the Students’ Library room of Khensa village. Agitated crowd had also gathered outside the Library and were demanding that the cadres be handed over to them.
Immediately, two columns of 31 AR, along with the police teams, blocked all the entry exit routes and another column established a close cordon around the Library.
On negotiation with youth leaders and the village council chairman, the cadres were handed over to Assam Rifles. The 31 AR personnel later apprehended the cadres and also seized the arms held with them. The cadres and suspects were handed over to the police.
“The incident is a reflection of the resolve of Assam Rifles in maintaining peace in North East region,” said a release issued by the Assam Rifles.
