IMPHAL — The Assam Rifles and Indian Army, in a coordinated joint operation, dismantled active insurgent infrastructure in a remote sector under Henglep subdivision in Manipur's Churachandpur district on Tuesday, according to the Assam Rifles.
According to a press release issued by PRO Assam Rifles (South), "Acting on precise intelligence regarding the movement of United Kuki National Army (UKNA) cadres, the operation was executed in treacherous terrain and inclement weather conditions."
"A fire fight ensued when the troops approached the hideout resulting in neutralisation of one insurgent while others escaped."
Subsequent combing operations led to the destruction of fortified bunkers and the recovery of a sizable cache of arms, ammunition and warlike stores, the release stated.
By dismantling the infrastructure of insurgents, the security forces reinforced their commitment towards restoring peace and normalcy, it added.
Though the release did not mention details of the recovery during the operation, it shared two photographs of the seized items, including one AK-47 rifle along with magazines, ammunition, explosives and other incriminating items.
The release also did not mention the identity of the deceased UKNA cadre.
However, the Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), Churachandpur district, in a press statement issued on Wednesday, identified the victim as Lenminsang of Kolchung village.
The KSO claimed that Lenminsang was an "unarmed civilian" and had no involvement in any armed activity.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the security forces carried out intensive operations and dismantled 30 bunkers, outposts and strategic camps found in the vicinity of Leilon Vaiphei, Konshakhul, Leilon Khunou and L Mulnui villages in Kangpokpi district.
During the operations, the security forces also recovered several arms and ammunition, including eleven 12 Bore SBBLs, 294 live rounds of ammunition, six bulletproof vests, and detained four persons for questioning.
