KOHIMA, MAY 14 : A cultural event marking the birth centenary tribute to eminent Assamese writer late Hariprasad Gorkharai was held at Kohima today. The programme was jointly organized by the Asom Sahitya Sabha and Kohima Sahitya Sabha Bhawan.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Dhruva Jyoti Bora, President of the Asom Sahitya Sabha said language is a connecting factor for the Northeast. He said the friendship bond between Assam and Nagaland is centuries old and the main aim of the visit of the Sabha (from Assam) is to strengthen the bond with cultural exchange.
On the occasion, Dr. Bora paid rich tributes to renowned Assamese writers Hariprasad Gorkharai, Gobinda Chandra Poira and Dhanbahadur Sonar, with whose vision the Asom Sahitya Sabha branch in Kohima was established. He said the Asom Sahitya Sabha will be observing a year-long celebration of its centenary from December 26 next with various programmes at all its branches in different states. The Kohima Sahitya Sabha was set up in 1895 in Kohima by a school teacher of Kohima, Padmanath Gohain Barua along with the eminent writers to promote literature of the region and also strengthen the age-old bond of friendship, fraternity and brotherhood among the people of Nagaland and Assam, he added.
Chief Electoral Officer and Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor of Nagaland, Sanjay Kumar, who also attended the event expressed that he was not aware of the activities of Assamese culture in Kohima. He appreciated the Asom Sahitya Sabha for its efforts and expressed optimism that their works will go a long way to promote cultural as well as literary success of the North East. The programme was chaired by Paramanand Rajbongshi, general secretary of Asom Sahitya Sabha.
