Dimapur, Nov. 1 (EMN): Flood waters may have subsided in Dimapur but the repercussions of its devastation continue to wreak havoc for some people.
A family from Darogajan village in East Dimapur have been cleaning their house for the past four days, in the aftermath of the flood. Their house was submerged by flood waters for the second time in the past three years. Flood waters had engulfed their house, with only the roof visible from afar during a flood in 2017, and a similar scene was seen in October this year too.
The owner, a 63-year-old retired government servant and his 55-year-old wife (who didn’t wish to be named), while speaking to Eastern Mirror, said that despite cleaning the house for the past four days, they haven’t been able to sleep in the house because of foul smell.
During the recent flood, they were inside the house along with their daughter. “During the rainy season, nothing happened and in October it rains occasionally, so we were not prepared and aware that we would face this kind of flood situation,” he explained.
The owner informed that they had bought the plot unaware that it was prone to flooding, adding that he had invested his entire retirement money on the house.
“If possible, we want to sell this house but I don’t think anyone will buy,” he said.
They have not received any help from the government except from their neighbours, he stated. He further mentioned that everything in the house got spoiled and even their livestock were swept away. Since the house is still under construction, all the sand, cement, construction wood, materials and water containers were swept away by the flood, he said.
He said that he was able to save only his documents.
He went on to inform that damages caused by the flood would be more than one lakh as he had invested around INR 15 lakh in the house, including the retaining wall. Floods could happen again in the future but the family has nowhere to go.
“To save from this flood situation, it’s up to God; human cannot do anything,” he said.
