One Major of the 21 Para (Special Force) of Indian Army has been killed in an exchange with insurgents at Lenglong under Nungba subdivision in Manipur’s Tameglong district.
In an earlier encounter with Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), one Army jawan of the unit was killed in the area on April 11, according to reports. The Major died fighting the ZUF insurgents in the dense jungle area during a separate encounter yesterday, police sources said today.
The slain Army Major Amit Deswal was from Jhajjar district in Haryana. His body was recovered by the Army, which was flown to Imphal around 11 am.
The Army had launched anti-insurgency operation against the insurgents in the area where their hideouts were set up. ZUF is active in Tamenglong which the outfit claims as their stronghold.
Tamenglong district headquarters is located about 150 km west of capital Imphal.
Reports said the Tamenglong encounter took place between the jawans of Special Forces assisted by Rashtriya Rifles and a combined team of ZUF and NSCN (K). The outfit is also active in the area.
Quoting Army sources a section of national media reported that Major Amit Deswal lost his life in the Tamenglong encounter in which one ZUF cadre was also eliminated by the Army in the Tamenglong encounter. But the report could not be officially confirmed yet.
AR jawan killed, 3 hurt in Imphal blast
One Assam Rifles jawan was killed and three others were injured following a powerful explosion triggered by suspected insurgents here on Thursday.
The blast occurred at about 7 am near Khuman Lampak in Imphal East. Police believed the bomb was triggered by suspected insurgents to target the Assam Rifles personnel who were on patrol duty.
AR personnel Bijendrakumar from Rajasthan was critically wounded in the attack and later succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The three injured personnel were taken to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal for treatment. However, they were discharged later from the hospital.
The injured personnel are Manishkumar and Hemencha Devanath hailing from West Bengal. No group has claimed responsibility.
