Army chief reviews security in Manipur

IMPHAL — The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Upendra Dwivedi, undertook a day-long visit to Manipur on Wednesday to review the prevailing security situation and the operational readiness of Indian Army and Assam Rifles formations deployed in the state, according to Army sources.


In a press release issued on Tuesday, the PRO and Army spokesperson for Manipur, Nagaland, and Southern Arunachal Pradesh under the Ministry of Defence said the visit underscored the Indian Army’s continued commitment to stability and development in the region.


During the visit, the Army Chief was briefed on the ground situation and ongoing initiatives aimed at maintaining peace and security. He reviewed the operational preparedness of troops and commended their professionalism, resilience, and dedication in challenging circumstances, the release stated.


General Dwivedi also called on Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and discussed issues related to security and development. The meeting highlighted the coordinated efforts between the civil administration and armed forces in fostering peace and progress in the state.


Later in the day, the Army Chief witnessed the inaugural match of Group F of the 134th edition of the Durand Cup—Asia’s oldest football tournament—held at the Khuman Lampak Stadium. The event marked the tournament’s return to Imphal after a gap of two years.

A cultural programme and military displays preceded the match, showcasing Manipur’s rich heritage and the pride of the Armed Forces. The Army Chief also interacted with players and officials of local teams NEROCA FC and TRAU FC. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.


The evening programme included aerial and ground displays by Army Aviation, band performances, and traditional dances, reflecting a celebration of youth, sports, and unity.


General Dwivedi was accompanied by the GOC-in-Chief, Eastern Command, the GOC of Spears Corps, and other senior officers. The visit reaffirmed the Army’s role in fostering peace, promoting youth engagement through sports, and strengthening civil-military cooperation for holistic development in Manipur.


Meanwhile, the Raj Bhavan in Imphal, in a separate press release, stated that the Governor extended his congratulations to the Army leadership for the successful execution of Operation Sindoor. He lauded the Indian Army for its professionalism, commitment, and tireless efforts in ensuring the security and stability of the region.
