Imphal, Dec. 19 (EMN): Tengnoupal Battalion of Assam Rifles claimed to have apprehended an alleged gold smuggler and recovered 36 gold bars weighing approximately 5.982 kg worth INR 8 crore during a normal checking at Permanent Vehicle Check Post(PVCP) located at Khudengthabi, about 100 km south of Imphal,according to Assam Rifles sources.
“On Dec. 18 at around 7 am based on specific input, a silver colour maruti omni van (MN06LA–6478) travelling from Moreh to Imphal was stopped for checking at PVCP, Khudengthabi by troops of Tengnoupal battalion,” said Assam Rifles PRO in a press release on Tuesday.
“While frisking and carrying out thorough check of the driver and the vehicle, 36 gold bars suspected to be of foreign origin, were found hidden inside both the rear doors of the vehicle (18 gold bars in each door).” During interrogation the driver revealed that he was given the said bars by an unknown individual from Moreh and was promised that the same would be collected at Imphal by someone, it said.
The contraband item was being smuggled by Md Abdul Rajak(22), Moreh, Tengnoupal district, it said. The recovered gold bars along with the apprehendee have been handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Dec. 18.
