Situated at a distance that can be covered in just about 40 minutes from Doyang Hydro Electric Project (DHEP) in Wokha District, and about 2 hours from Mokokchung town is Okotso village, recorded as the first Lotha Baptist Church, having established its Church in 1904. The decades old PWD Road linking DHEP with the NH 61 via Sungro EAC Hqs., Pangti and Okotso villages in Wokha District and Mangmedong, Longkhum villages (of Mokokchung District) is black topped up to Mangmedong only. As such, the condition of the road from Mangmedong onwards, entering Okotso village land under Wokha district is sadly deplorable due to years of utter negligence. Never the less, there are scores of people from neighboring Mokochung and Zunheboto Districts including other Eastern Nagaland Districts braving this road to visit the Doyang Hydro Electric Project through all favorable seasons of the year is a pride for people of Sungro range. Okotso village has since time immemorial, shared its boundaries with Mangmedong, Longkhum and Changki villages of Mokokchung District with outstanding cordial relation and harmony through all situations; and congenial cultural exchange from time to time. In February 2016, when unfortunately some houses were gutted down by fire at Longkhum village, members of Okotso Village Council, sponsored and let by T.L. Merry visited and met officials of the VDB/VC of Longkhum and also extended meager help to express Okotsoe’s sincere concern and solidarity to the devastated families in particular and the longkhum villagers in general.
In the effort to help boost the economy of the villagers and its surrounding villages under Sungro Range as well, Okotso to Chubi river road was, under acute hardship, constructed by Okotso villagers aided by NREGS. This road is considered as the villagers’ life line for the fact that it penetrates or pierces all areas on the 10 Km. stretch, encompassing the - i) Village Community Forest, ii) Okotso Rubber plantations and iii) the only transportable means for various business and life supporting purposes including vast stretch of cultivable land, vital to livelihood and source of economy of the villagers and the surrounding areas. This hard earned road has been guarded, looked after and maintained by the villagers through all situations.
This preceding year’s unpredictable monsoon, clubbed with unprecedented torrential rains caused heavy landslides damaging this “Okotso – Chubi” road which was beyond any possibility to clear in it a few days time by mere human labor. However, with the service of JCB sponsored by T.L. Merry, villagers and members representing different organizations worked for 2 days and got the precious road repaired and cleared. The Okotso Village Council, on behalf of the Okotso Village Baptist and AG Churches and Villagers thank T.L. Merry for the much needed support and pray that God shower his blessings bountifully and keep him and all dear to him safe and healthy.
