Mokokchung, June 3 : Youths from a locality under Dilong ward of Mokokchung town have being ‘carpeting’ the colony’s road to the main market since May 16. The under-repairs road in Yimsen Kiyong is a stretch of more than 300 meters. It shortens the route to the market by around 2 kilometers but had been in a pathetic condition for the past many years.
Taking into account the inaction of the authorities, a resident of the colony, P Limatoshi Aier, a retired government teacher, spearheaded a tiny initiative to repair the road, wholeheartedly supported by the locals.
The residents disclosed that that the road had been left neglected for more than twelve years although it was one of the most important roads in proper Mokokchung through which hundreds of motorists and pedestrians commute every day. The area’s residents collected some funds while youths volunteered to repair the road.
Residents are also grateful to Dr Rev Takatemjen, former principal of Clark Theological College and to families residing in the locality for their contributions.
The retired teacher Limatoshi Aier expressed deep appreciation for the efforts rendered by the colony’s youths who had been toiling at the patch for more than ten days. The youths had been using simple tools. The steep road cannot accommodate heavy machineries including road rollers.
‘Even the mixture of materials and preparing of tar, sand and Bitumen are being prepared by locals, which is a good sight,’ Aier said. The youths are setting a good example for others to emulate especially when it comes to dignity of labour as being exemplified, he said.
