  • Representatives of Ao Senden, Ao Lanur Telongjem, and Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem with government officials after inspecting the Mokokchung-Mariani road on Monday.

  • DIMAPUR — The Ao Senden, along with representatives of Ao Lanur Telongjem and Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT), undertook an on-the-spot inspection of the vital road linking Mokokchung and Mariani (Assam) on Monday.

  • In a press release on Monday, the MTLT informed that the Mariani-Mokokchung road, officially called National Highway 702D, is one of the vital lifelines for the people of Mokokchung district.

  • “Over the years, this vital economic road line for Mokokchung and her neighbouring districts had remained in a pathetic condition, hampering the well-being of the commuters, especially the tuckers ferrying essential commodities,” it stated.

  • During the inspection tour, the Ao Senden team stopped at Changki village where the Changki Village Council received the entourage and shared their views about the NH-702D condition.

  • The council expressed concern about the “drainage system” and requested proper construction of the drainage to ensure all-weather road conditions.

  • On their part, the PWD (National Highway) of Mokokchung Division assured that the whole project will be completed by March 14 and solicited the support of all.

  • Speaking to the contractor, government officials, and others, Ao Senden vice president Tinukaba said that all works, whether blacktopping or drainage, should be completed in a time-bound manner.

  • He emphasised the impending monsoon season, which would greatly hamper the developmental works. Tinukaba also expressed dissatisfaction over the poor drainage system and asked the contractor concerned to ensure that the highway is motorable in all seasons.

  • Assuring timely completion, the contractor informed that phases one and two of the project have already been completed. The third phase, which is ‘soiling,’ will start shortly once official communication from Guwahati is received, he added.

  • Representatives of the truckers’ union, who were part of the entourage, expressed concern about the drainage system and specifically requested the road builder and the government to look into the issue, since the truckers face hardships during the monsoon seasons.

  • In response, the contractor, Ghunavi Aye, assured timely completion of the remaining works without extending the contract’s deadline.
