Former Chhattisgarh Governor Sushri Anusuiya Uikey who was appointed as Governor of Manipur on Feb. 12 has been sworn in as the 18th Governor of the state at the Dubar hall of Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Wednesday.
Manipur High Court acting Chief Justice MV Muralidaran administered the oath of office to Anusuiya Uikey.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Speaker of Manipur assembly Th. Satyabrata Singh, Council of Ministers, Rajya Sabha MP Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba,s tate Chief Secretary Dr. Rajesh Kumar led other officials, senior citizens and representatives of political parties were present during the swearing in ceremony.
Speaking to reporters after the swearing in ceremony, the newly inducted governor thanked the central government's initiative for the development of the region and wished the people of Manipur. She expressed her desire to work together for the welfare of Manipur.
Later, Uikey also inspected guard of honour by a combined contingent consisting of IRB (Indian Reserve Battalion), MR (Manipur Rifles) led by Commanding Officer Khoisnam Sarma of 9th IRB at Raj Bhavan.
In the afternoon, Uikey visited Indian National Army (INA) advanced headquarters at Moirang in Bishnupur district wherein she paid floral tribute to the statue of Supreme Commander of INA and great freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. She also visited Sendra Tourist Resort at Moirang and Shri Shri Govindajee temple in Imphal.
In a tweet on Wednesday, Chief Minister Biren Singh wrote: “Attended the Swearing-in Ceremony of Hon'ble Governor, Sushri Anusuiya Uikye at Raj Bhavan today. I am immensely pleased to welcome Her Excellency and look forward to working together with her for the people of the state.”
Uikey is a resident of Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh and has served as a Rajya sabha member of the BJP from 2006 to 2012 during which she was a member of several parliamentary committee.
Governor Uikey replaced former Manipur governor La Ganesan after the latter was appointed as the governor of Nagaland.
With day's swearing in, Anusuiya Uikey becomes the second lady governor in the state after Najma Heptulla who had served the northeastern state from August 2016 to 2019. Imphal, Feb. 22 (EMN)
