Dimapur, October 31: All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) said the reported incident of unwarranted manhandling, arrest, detention and torture of M Angamba Meitei, president of Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) and his colleagues by the Manipur Police on October 29 at Manipur University was unfortunate and condemnable by one and all.
Stating that the scene enacted in Manipur University campus on October 29 was simply a testimony of the Manipur police personnel’s immaturity and cowardice which has always depended on force and violence instead of enforcing the rule of law and being people friendly, ANSAM publicity wing said such act was an insult to civil organisations and students’ body in particular which do not have place in the civilized world.
Referring to law, ANSAM said people cannot be detained, insulted, their lives threatened and dignity taken away by police commandos whose sole duty are to enforce the law of the land, protect life and uphold the dignity of the people, be it in New Delhi or in Manipur.Having experienced such violence and brutalities regularly, ANSAM questioned as to why civil police commit and perpetrates such violent and harassment against DESAM leaders.
ANSAM further urged the Government of Manipur to discipline their police personnel to respect citizen and human rights as well as keep close surveillance on the activities of JAC, Manipur University and the Manipur University Authority.
