Wokha, April 17 (EMN): Weeks after the assault on a senior medical doctor in Dimapur sent shockwaves across the state, another doctor was assaulted by police personnel on duty in Wokha town on Friday.
The incident occurred at around 11 am, below the DC office when the doctor was crossing a restricted area, which was notified as a one-way street by the superintendent of police, Wokha on April 6.
The incident reportedly transpired after the doctor questioned the police personnel on duty for the road blockade, and the police, in anger, retaliated by beating the doctor with batons.
The doctor received bruises on the head and body.
Later, the district administration, police and family of the victim had a ‘discussion’ on the incident.
It was also learned that the traffic rules, which was issued earlier, would remain the same, ‘while changes would be made according to the situation’.
The traffic regulation was issued to avoid traffic inconvenience, and for the public to practice social distancing during market hours.
On April 3, a senior medical officer and Covid-19 quarantine officer stationed at the District Hospital, Dimapur (DHD), Dr. Nosezol Sezo, was assaulted by a group of Special Task Force (STF) personnel while on his way back home from duty at around 11.30 pm.
Consequently, on April 13, the three members of the STF had apologised to the doctor during a “compromise meeting” in Kohima, according to a DIPR report.
The Indian Dental Association Nagaland State Branch (IDANSB) has condemned what it stated was “the barbaric act of felony committed by the police personnel of Wokha” upon Dr. Mongshithung Murry as he was out purchasing essential supplies for his family.
“Just as the community was barely recovering from the shocking incident where a medical officer was brutally attacked by Nagaland Police personnel of the STF, yet another gruesome and horrifying incident has taken place where another medical professional, Dr. Mongshithung Murry was mercilessly assaulted on the morning of April 17 at Wokha,” read a statement from the association.
Despite earnest appeal to the police personnel and even after producing his proof of identification as a medical professional, he was brutally assaulted to the point of destroying the police baton on the victim’s head leading to massive injury and intense trauma, it stated.
‘The IDANSB hereby express our strongest condemnation of the unwarranted inhumane criminal act committed on the doctor by the drunken police personnel who were on official duty. We appeal to authorities concerned to take action at the earliest lest there be repercussions and boycotting of medical services by the association,’ read the statement.
