Angwandi workers in wokha trained on HIV and STI

Resource persons along with other officials and Anganwadi worker during training on HIV and STI in Wokha town on Friday.


  • DIMAPUR — Nagaland State AIDS Control Society (NSACS) under the Department of Health and Family Welfare, in collaboration with Department of Social Welfare, conducted training on HIV and STI for Anganwadi workers at the conference hall of the chief medical officer (CMO) in Wokha town and Chukitong town hall on Friday.

  • Delivering the welcome address, C James Ezung, district welfare officer, Wokha, appreciated the NSACS officials and facilitators for organising the training for Anganwadi workers. He encouraged the Anganwadi workers to learn from the training and further disseminate information on HIV and STI on a wider scale, an update from CMO stated.

  • Speaking on elimination of vertical transmission of HIV and syphilis, Dr. M Nukshisangla Jamir, NSACS joint director (BSD), emphasised on early diagnosis and treatment as it can allow an HIV positive person to lead a normal life. She stated that HIV and syphilis are mostly transmitted through sexual route and sharing of syringe and needles by drug users.

  • She further spoke on the World Health Organisation clinical staging of HIV, common signs and symptoms of sexually transmitted infection (STI).

  • Session on HIV and AIDS (prevention and control) Act 2017 was delivered by Metevinuo Sakhrie, NSACS joint director (IEC), She highlighted on the need for more awareness as more than 1000 HIV positive cases were detected in the state last year.

  • Briefing on the objective of the Act, Metevinuo said the Government of India passed the Act in 2017 to protect positive people facing stigma and discrimination in the society. She elaborated on the provisions of the act regarding how it changes the perception of society towards positive person, punishable offences, imprisonment, disclosure of HIV positive status and duties of ombudsman.

  • Session on basics of HIV and AIDS, district HIV scenario and services available was taken by Lichumo Odyuo, DPO, DISHA, Wokha. He explained on the mode of transmission and the activities on HIV conducted by the DAPCU team in the district.

  • Moderator for the training was Ainato Yeptho, NSACS deputy director (MS).

  • The training was attended by Renchano Odyuo, CDPO Wokha; Dr. Thungchanbemo Ezung, CMO Wokha; and Anganwadi workers of Wokha town and Chukitong town.
