villagers torched the Chekso forest sub-beat office under the Dongkamokam forest
range under Baithalangso Police station in West Karbi Anglong, Assam, on March
17 night.
- The extreme step to set afire at the
outpost office followed an incident in which a 28-year-old man identified as Kiri
Phura was killed by wild elephant on March 17.
- The villagers' outrage was
fueled by the delay on the part of forest department officials to retrieve
Phura's body. Kiri Phura was a resident of Borthoiso village in West Karbi
Anglong, Assam.
- According to sources, Kiri Phura was
killed by a rogue wild elephant on the spot while collecting ants for
consumption. The incident occurred around 1 pm on March 17.
- Despite being informed, the forest
department failed to retrieve the body till 7 pm leading to a delay in chasing
the elephant and performing their duties. In response, the villagers gathered
and burnt down the forest department's office.
- The villagers also shouted slogans
against the Forest department.
- No official statement from the forest department
has been received while filling up this report
