Angami Women Organisation condemns alleged sexual abuse of a minor in Kohima and calls for justice and victim support.
DIMAPUR — The Angami Women Organisation (AWO) has condemned the reported rape and sexual abuse of a minor girl allegedly by her biological father in Kohima district, which reportedly resulted in her pregnancy.
Describing the incident as an “appalling crime” and a grave violation of a child’s dignity, safety and fundamental rights, the organisation expressed deep concern over the alleged abuse and the betrayal of trust by a person entrusted with the child’s care and protection.
“A father is expected to be a source of love, protection and security, and the betrayal of that trust in such a cruel and inhuman manner is deeply disturbing and unacceptable,” the AWO stated in its condemnation note.
The organisation said no child should have to endure such trauma, particularly at the hands of a family member responsible for her safety and well-being. It stressed that such alleged offences must be dealt with firmly under the law.
Referring to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, the AWO said the legislation provides a stringent legal framework to protect children from sexual abuse, assault and exploitation.
The organisation called upon the concerned authorities to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation and take stringent legal action against the accused under the relevant provisions of the POCSO Act and other applicable laws.
It also emphasised the need to ensure that justice is delivered without delay and that the minor receives appropriate medical care, psychological counselling and all necessary support to help her recover from the trauma.
“The survivor’s privacy, dignity and identity must be protected at every stage,” the organisation stated.
Expressing concern over sexual violence against children, the AWO urged society to stand firmly against all forms of such abuse and break the silence that often allows these crimes to remain hidden.
“Protecting children is a collective responsibility, and there can be no justification or tolerance for such heinous acts,” it said, adding that the survivor deserves compassion, justice and unwavering support, while the perpetrator must be held accountable under the law.
