Kohima, Nov. 13 (EMN): Keeping in view Nagaland’s government going plastic free, the Southern Angami Women Organisation (SAWO) undertook a cleanliness drive from the Lerie area to to the BOC on November 12 in Kohima.
Around 100 members of the SAWO from its units volunteered to clean the roadsides and drains that are said to be filled with garbage.
The SAWO’s secretary Thejasenuo Agnes said since the government had banned single-use plastic in any form, the organisation wanted to create awareness through the cleanliness drive. “By this small deed, we thought it will be good to show that we are concern about the cleanliness in our region,” she said.
The main objective of the cleanliness drive was to demonstrate support to the state government’s initiative and reject plastic to make for a ‘clean Kohima,’ said SAWO president Thono Kechü, during a short programme that was held before the cleanliness drive. Through such activities, she hoped that people would take it as an example and avoid littering the town.
An engineer of the PWD, Vizotuo Seletsu, said the drive was for a free-plastic town, and to clear drains. He appealed to the business community to use wastebins and avoid littering the town. He lauded the women’s organisation for carrying out the drive to set a good example for the public.
