Kohima, Feb 25 : Sekrenyi festival, known as Phousanyi by the Angami people, was celebrated with pomp and gaiety by member of the community at Kisama Heritage village, near Kohima town, on February 25. Chief Minister of Nagaland Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu was a ‘special invitee’ to the event. The day’s festivities was organised by the Angami Public Organisation.

Speaking during the occasion, Dr. Liezietsu said that Sekrenyi was the most important festival of the Angami community. Talking about the importance of identity, the chief minister called language the most important determinant of one’s identity. He urged the gathering to propagate their dialects to their children ‘so as to preserve and promote our own identity in this diverse ethnicity,’ a DIPR update on Saturday stated.
‘It is also an occasion where one could reminiscent our culture and traditions by upholding the values of better understanding, maintaining peace and tranquillity with our fellow beings besides celebrating the festival in a more refined manner,’ Dr. Liezietsu said. Also, he urged leaders from different organizations to ‘forget the past and keep only the good memories in the name of Sekrenyi festival.’
Sekrenyi at Phevima
Kacharigaon (Phevima), Dimapur celebrated Sekrenyi festival on February 25 at Kacharigaon Phevima Panchayat ground.The Kacharigaon Phevima Youth Organisation organized the festival. The occasion was marked by cultural presentations from womenfolk and youths. Traditional games such as greased-bamboo climbing and fire-making, among others, were the highlights of the day’s festivities.
Members of the village council, women organisation, youths and children participated in the celebrations.
