KOHIMA — The Angami Students' Union (ASU) has condemned the action of the Assam Rifles stationed at Avakhung Check Gate under Meluri district for allegedly disallowing the Naga Students' Federation (NSF) delegation from meeting Naga brethren living in Myanmar.
The ASU said in a statement that it was “aghast and appalled” by the action of the Assam Rifles in the early hours of Saturday, on the NSF team, who had references for the trip.
It stated that the Assam Rifles, which has often taken pride in self-proclaiming itself as “Friends of the hill people”, had instead become “foes of the hill people”.
It alleged that the personnel, “disguised in camouflage for protection”, were being “deliberately treacherous and perilous”.

The union said the Assam Rifles must be reminded that holding publicity events and distributing essential items “cannot overshadow the atrocities upon the Naga people over decades”. “Where, on the other side, it is internally employing destructive means to shatter the Naga people, which is a result of disallowing the NSF delegation to move in its homeland freely.”
Vehemently condemning the incident, the ASU also sought to know if the Government of India endorses such transgression against the rights of Naga people living across the border, particularly when the “unique history of the Nagas” has been acknowledged.
It also expressed solidarity with the NSF and called upon “all right-thinking Naga citizens to be prepared for any call, to assert our rights and our aspiration”.
