DIMAPUR — The All Nagaland College Students' Union (ANCSU) has appealed to the chief minister of Nagaland to reconsider the reported proposal for the temporary relocation of Government Polytechnic Doyang (GPD), Wokha, and instead take immediate preventive measures to address the landslide situation affecting parts of the institution’s campus.
In a representation to the chief minister, the union stated that Government Polytechnic Doyang holds a unique position in Nagaland’s technical education sector as the only polytechnic institution in the state offering a three-year Diploma in Architecture Assistantship programme.
It noted that the institution has consistently served as an important centre for technical and vocational education, catering to students from various districts across the state.
While acknowledging concerns over the safety of students, faculty members and staff due to recent landslide incidents, the ANCSU maintained that relocation should be considered only as a last resort.

The union argued that shifting the institution, even temporarily, could lead to significant academic disruption, administrative challenges, financial burdens and uncertainty among students, potentially affecting the institution’s growth and future enrolment.
The union further observed that the landslide situation may have been aggravated by continuous heavy rainfall as well as the ongoing PMGSY Phase-III road construction project connecting Doyang and Mangmetong in the vicinity of the campus.
In view of the situation, the ANCSU urged the state government to prioritise comprehensive preventive and protective measures rather than pursuing relocation plans.
It appealed to the chief minister to direct the concerned authorities to immediately undertake the construction of retaining and breast walls in vulnerable areas, along with regular monitoring and maintenance of landslide-prone zones.
The union expressed hope that the government, under the chief minister’s leadership, would take a judicious decision in the best interest of students and the future of technical education in Nagaland.
ANCSU further stated that temporary relocation of the institution should be considered only if all other remedial measures prove inadequate and the situation becomes unavoidable.
