DIMAPUR — The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) has urged colleges and educational institutions in Nagaland to refrain from implementing a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs mandating the recitation of Vande Mataram.
In a press release, the union expressed strong concern over the directive and said making the recitation compulsory in educational institutions would not be appropriate in the context of Nagaland.
The ANCSU stated that Nagaland is home to diverse communities with distinct cultural, historical and religious identities, and said enforcing such a directive could undermine the provisions of Article 371(A), the principle of conscience, democratic values, traditional practices and respect for diversity enshrined in the Constitution.

The union also said educational institutions should remain spaces for learning, mutual respect and inclusivity, adding that policies or directives that do not take into account the socio-cultural context of Nagaland may disturb the harmony that has been nurtured in academic institutions.
In view of these concerns, the ANCSU appealed to colleges and educational institutions across the state to restrain from implementing the directive mandating the recitation of Vande Mataram.
