DIMAPUR — The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) has sought immediate intervention of the Higher Education and Tourism minister for early release of 2nd installment of Post Matric Scholarship (PMS), which has been pending for the year 2023-2024.
In a letter to the minister, ANCSU has acknowledged the department (scheme implementing agency of PMS ST) for interceding with the concerned Ministry and prioritising the disbursement of the 2nd installment of the Post matric Scholarship to students. However, it expressed dismayed to witness the Ministry of Tribal Affairs repeatedly disregarding the primary purpose of the scholarship by releasing the funds in piecemeal, year after year.
The union claimed that delay in release of scholarship has caused immense distress to students who completely depended on the funds to meet their academic needs.
“The disbursement of an inadequate amount of scholarship to genuine beneficiaries has caused distress and anxiety among the student community, especially as the odd semester ends and new admissions for the even semester begin,” the union stated.
Mentioning that the Ministry of Tribal Affairs has released 75% of the central share to the state, the union stated that the remaining 25% amounting to INR 12,74,01,000 is yet to be sanctioned for PMS ST 2023-2024.
In light of the above mentioned circumstances, the union requested the minister to give serious consideration on the matter and urgently engage with the concerned ministry for an early release and disbursement of the pending 2nd installment of PMS ST.
While it appreciated the minister for his commendable involvement in ensuring the success of the upcoming Hornbill Festival, ANCSU stated that the students are mentally and emotionally disturbed by the pressing issue.
It stated that addressing the concerns would not only resolve the fundamental needs of the student community but also uphold the commitment of the esteemed authority to the educational welfare of students in Nagaland.
It further expressed confidence on his ability to take the necessary steps to resolve the issue at the earliest.
