Dimapur, March 1 (EMN): In continuation of its education tour, leaders of the All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) visited college institutions in Dimapur and Phek district. The organisation has reported a considerable number of struggle and ‘pitiable infrastructure’ in the government-run institutions.
The organisation visited the Pfutsero Government College in Phek district; and Dimapur-based institutions Public College of Commerce, SD Jain Girls College, St. John College, Dimapur Government College, Pranabananda Women’s College, Immanuel College, and Mt. Mary College at Chumukedima, also in Dimapur.
The tour is stated to be in its second phase. In the first phase, the ANCSU visited colleges in Zunheboto and Mokokchung district. The students’ organisation issued a press release on Sunday informing about their findings from the tour.
‘During the time of touring the colleges, ANCSU could observe that government colleges continue to struggle with pitiable infrastructures,’ the organisation stated.
‘The ANCSU while welcoming the positive action of the state government and concerned district administration in carrying out a land survey in the district colleges with land issue, appeals that there has to be a proper boundary wall to protect the land of the colleges, which has been the demand of the union.’
The union visited the new site of the Pfutsero Government College and expressed appreciation to the college and the department for having fenced the new site to protect it from any kind of encroachment in the future.
During interactions with the contractor of the college’s new administrative block, the union ‘conveyed its concern for a timely completion’ of the construction work.
The ANCSU also expressed discontent at what it called the “slow progress” of constructing the science block building and boys’ hostel at Dimapur Government College.
“The union strongly reiterates that basic college infrastructures like library, toilets and college bus should be made available to the colleges in convenience, to which many of the government colleges are still lacking,” the press release stated.
As for private institutions, the union stated that the private colleges continue to contribute much to the academic growth of the state. The union has highlighted the importance of following the University Grants Commission’s guidelines and norms. During the tour, the ANCSU heard the grievances of the students and the colleges to which the union assured taking the matters to the authority in concern on priority.
“ANCSU highlighted to the students on scholarship, land issue, academic council, Nagaland University related matters and further appealed the students not only to fight against what is wrong but also not to practice what is wrong. The union would be visiting the remaining colleges in the coming phase of the tour,” the press release.
