Imphal, Sep. 7 (EMN): The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) has called for a 100 hours blockade on the Imphal-Jiribam sector of National Highway 37 from September 8 midnight in protest against the government’s failure to arrest suspected NSCN (IM) cadres for allegedly threatening AMSU volunteers and artistes.
President Manjit Sarangthem of AMSU announced this during a press conference in Imphal on Friday.
On September 3 around 7.40 pm, four individuals claiming to be NSCN (IM) cadres’ threatened AMSU general secretary Soibam Anil led volunteers and artists group at Nungba in Tamenglong district when they were returning to Imphal from Silchar after taking part in an event organised by the All Assam Manipuri Students’ Union. The said individuals also took INR 5000 from them, he added.
On September 5, the NSCN (IM) had denied involvement in the alleged September 3 incident. However the outfit claimed to have arrested two miscreants who were found extorting at Nungba area in the name of NSCN.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh had already said that the necessary search operations to nab involved the culprits has already been started.
The Core committee of the 10 opposition parties in Manipur demanded to book those involved persons in the incident while CPI Manipur state council demanded establishment of National Highways protection force in the state.
