Amit Shah will visit Manipur in October to lay Senapati Medical College foundation stone and review developmental projects
IMPHAL — Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Manipur in the first week of October and lay the foundation stone for a new medical college in Senapati district, besides reviewing developmental projects in the State.
Shah gave the assurance during a meeting with Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at his official residence in New Delhi at around 3 pm on Wednesday, according to sources in the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.
In a post on X, Khemchand Singh said he had invited Shah to visit Manipur and that the Home Minister had agreed to visit the State in October. He said they discussed a wide range of issues concerning Manipur and that Shah assured him that the Central government would fulfil the “wishes and aspirations” of the people.
The chief minister said Shah had also agreed to lay the foundation stone for the proposed Senapati Medical College and review other developmental projects.
The meeting also saw Shah laud the state government for resuming the Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati bus service and ensuring free movement along National Highway-2, according to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.
The Manipur Cabinet had recently decided to establish a new medical college in Senapati district, which has a predominantly Naga population.
Earlier in the day, Khemchand Singh met Union Minister for Minority Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju at his official residence in New Delhi. The two discussed issues concerning Manipur, with the chief minister seeking Central assistance for the development and welfare of minority communities and various developmental projects.
Rijiju assured the chief minister of all possible assistance from his ministry, according to sources.
The meetings come amid heightened political activity in New Delhi over demands for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur ahead of the Census.
Various civil society organisations, including the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation, have been demanding an update of the NRC before the Census exercise in the State.
Khemchand Singh left Imphal for New Delhi on Tuesday amid reports that he had been called to meet Central leaders. Former Chief Minister N Biren Singh also reached the national capital on Tuesday, while a group of ruling BJP MLAs has been camping there for meetings with the party’s Central leadership.
