IMPHAL — With Manipur continuing to grapple with prolonged unrest, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday reviewed the state’s law and order situation and urged faster progress in the peace process during a meeting with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh in New Delhi.
According to a statement from the chief minister’s secretariat, Shah assessed the prevailing security scenario and directed the state government to accelerate ongoing peace efforts while strengthening trust and harmony among communities.
The Union home minister also gave in-principle approval for raising a Mahila India Reserve Battalion (IRB) in Manipur and asked the state to submit a detailed proposal.
Sharing details of the meeting on X, Chief Minister Singh said the interaction focused on improving the law and order situation and reinforcing communal harmony.

“I express my sincere gratitude to the Hon’ble Home Minister for his in-principle approval for the raising of a Mahila IRB Battalion, aimed at enhancing our capacity in maintaining law and order and ensuring internal security,” he stated, adding that the proposal would be submitted soon.
The meeting comes at a time when Manipur continues to witness sporadic tensions following ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023, leaving over 260 people dead and displacing around 60,000 others.
In recent days, fresh tension was reported in Ukhrul district after four cadres of the Eastern Flank of the NSCN (Nagalim) were killed in an alleged ambush in Kamjong district.
However, the situation in Ukhrul has since calmed following a condolence service held after consultations among stakeholders.
Officials said the Centre remains focused on restoring lasting peace and stability in the state, even as efforts continue to address security challenges and rebuild trust among communities.
