Dimapur, Jan. 14: The Zeliangrong Youth Front (ZYF) and the Naga Women’s Union (NWU) have condemned the alleged third degree torture meted out to two UNC leaders in police custody.
A ZYF press statement termed it as complete violation of civil rights and also an insult to Naga people. “Such treatment is not permitted to treat even upon the dreaded and notorious criminal therefore the Manipur government deserves strongest condemnation by every right thinking people. “The denial of proper medical attention even after cruel and inhuman tortured, not serving proper breakfast and lunch to the Naga civil leaders is an act attempt to kill the Naga civil leaders in the police custody which is a crime more serious than the imposition of economic blockade,” it stated.
In a separate statement, the NWU said that the ‘existing imbroglio is political and not law and order problem and it can be settled if the government of Manipur has the political will to do so.’ “Holding the UNC President and Information & Publicity Secretary as prisoners will not solve the crisis. Rather, it will only aggravate the situation.
Therefore, we call upon the government of Manipur to release them at the earliest. While expressing our solidarity with our leaders, we would like to remind the government of Manipur that it will be held responsible for any eventualities.”
