  • DIPHU — The All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC) on Monday organised a sit-in at Diphu against extending panchayat elections from plain districts (Nagaon, Morigaon, Golaghat) to Karbi Anglong Autonomous District, demanding immediate withdrawal.

  • Speaking to the media, APHLC president Jones Ingti Kathar said, “The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has remained silent on the illegal conduct of panchayat elections in the autonomous district of Karbi Anglong by plain districts, implying their tacit support. They seem intimidated by external forces like Bongo Sena and Bihar Sena, which is why they have chosen to remain silent.”

  • “When APHLC comes to power, we will provide free land pattas to every individual and protect Karbi Anglong's land from encroachment by plain districts. We will stand firm on this issue, regardless of the silence from CEM Tuliram Ronghang and MP Amarsing Tisso,” he asserted.

  • The protestors also submitted a memorandum to Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya as he is the head of the head of the Sixth Schedule Area, informed Kathar.

  • APHLC spokesperson Angtong Ingti Kathar also said that, “The plain districts of Morigaon, Nagaon, and Golaghat have intruded into Karbi Anglong's autonomous district by conducting panchayat elections. Specifically, 11 polling stations in the Duar-amla MAC constituency of West Karbi Anglong have been included in Nagaon district. Furthermore, the recent Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) election has also encroached upon Karbi Anglong's territory, undermining the integrity and autonomy of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).”

  • “It is unfortunate that KAAC's leadership has remained silent and abdicated its responsibility, leaving its people helpless. This raises questions about the effectiveness of our elected representatives in KAAC, the Assam Legislative Assembly, and the Indian Parliament,” he added.

  • Meanwhile, leaders of Karbi Students’ Association and APHLC also staged a protest at Tengkeralangso daily market in West Karbi Anglong.

  •  “We burnt the effigy of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Chief Executive Member, Tuliram Ronghang, MLA Rupsing Teron and local MAC Probat Chandra Taro for remaining silent as the panchayat elections are been conducted in the Sixth Schedule Area. As per the constitution, Panchayat election cannot be conducted in the Sixth Schedule Area and we will oppose on it,” said KSA president Ramsing Tokbi.
