Perfume baron and chief of All India United Democratic Front, Badruddin Ajmal, will meet the Registrar General and Union home minister Rajnath Singh on April 23 to discuss discrepancies in the ongoing process of updating the National Register for Citizens (NRC).
He added that he would also draw 'the Supreme Court's attention' to the issue.
According to Ajmal, complaints like not having access to voters' list, discrepancy in names on the voters' list and non-availability of adequate forms for the process have been surfacing.
After the Assam State Jamiat Ulema (ASJU), of which he is the president, met on Monday, Ajmal explained, "Our stance is that no Bangladeshi should get their name enrolled in the NRC. At the same time, genuine Indians should not miss out on the chance of enrolling themselves as citizens. We want a foolproof NRC. For this to happen, discrepancies have to be rectified. As the updating process is taking place under the direction of the Supreme Court, we want to draw its attention to the deficiencies," Ajmal said.
The Dhubri MP, however, clarified that AJSU would not file a case in the apex court.
"We do not want to affect the ongoing NRC update.
We will submit a memorandum to highlight the discrepancies," ASJU secretary Maulana Fozlul Karim Quasimi said.
"We have planned to send a delegation to President Pranab Mukherjee, Union home minister Rajnath Singh and the Registrar General on April 23 to point out the anomalies," Quasimi said.
He said the Jamiat earlier met chief minister Tarun Gogoi and the state coordinator of NRC, Prateek Hajela, to highlight flaws in the update process.
"Though some anomalies have been corrected, some still remain. These need to be rectified," Quasimi said.
The process is likely to be completed by January 2016. Updating the NRC has become imperative in tackling the problem of infiltration in Assam and March 25, 1971, has been accepted as the cut-off date for detecting foreigners in the state.
The NRC update will include the NRC of 1951 and the pre-1971 electoral rolls as primary documents for the inclusion of one's name. The process has faced a number of controversies over the years.
