DIMAPUR — Retired IPS officer Ajit Lal, a 1974-batch Himachal Pradesh cadre officer, is likely to replace AK Mishra as interlocutor for the Naga peace talks, according to a report published by The Print.
The report stated that Ajit Lal will take over as adviser (Northeast) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, replacing AK Mishra, whose term ended last week.

Mishra, a 1987-batch Rajasthan IPS cadre officer, had been involved in tripartite talks with Kuki-Zo insurgent groups that signed the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the Centre, as well as in the Naga peace talks. The Print reported that Lal is expected to assume these responsibilities.
The reported change comes at a crucial juncture as the Centre is engaged in political dialogue with SoO groups in Manipur to address their demand for a Union Territory with a separate legislature. The SoO pact was extended last September for five years.
On June 12, 2025, AK Mishra held a series of meetings with Naga political groups at the Rhododendron Hall in the Chümoukedima Police complex.
