DIMAPUR — While
stressing on the importance of understanding Nagaland’s political situation,
the secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC) and in-charge of Nagaland,
Christopher Tilak, has emphasised the need for a clear strategy and active
involvement of youth, women and other stakeholders to build a strong electoral
campaign.
Tilak stated this during meetings with Congress workers held
at Crave Inn Hotel in Jalukie town under Peren district and at Congress Bhavan
in Dimapur on Tuesday. The AICC secretary, accompanied by S Supongmeren Jamir,
Member of Parliament and PCC president; Khriedi Theunuo, NPCC working
president; and host party leaders, visited Peren and Dimapur districts as part
of his statewide inter district tour programme.
A NPCC press release issued by communication department
stated that Tilak briefed the gatherings about his visit aimed at strengthening
the party and stressed on the importance of understanding Nagaland’s political
situation.
While Congress currently has no MLA in the state, he noted
that electing a Member of Parliament was a major achievement. He added that the
ruling government has a chief minister, but the opposition has a Member of Lok
Sabha, which according to him highlighted Congress' growing presence in the
state despite the many challenges that it continues to face.
Speaking about the 2028 elections, Tilak emphasised the need
for a clear strategy and active involvement of youth, women and other
stakeholders to build a strong electoral campaign.
He warned that BJP’s policies pose a threat to democracy and
tribal rights. Besides, he further raised concerns about political instability
in the northeast and increasing unemployment, which is forcing many youth to
migrate for jobs.
Also speaking in the meeting, NPCC working president,
Khriedi Theunuo, highlighted the importance of unity. He reaffirmed the
Congress party’s commitment to secularism and its founding inclusive
principles.
He acknowledged the overwhelming bipartisan support of the
electorates of Nagaland in the last general elections and emphasised that Nagas
have come together as a united force. He also stated that the Lok Sabha
election results reflected the people's ardent desire for change and that
Congress remains strong due to its dedication to the Constitution and the
democratic ideals enshrined in it.
Meanwhile, Supongmeren Jamir remarked that the Congress
party should aim to form the government in Nagaland in 2028. He urged officials
of DCC Peren and its two subordinate ACCC to start working at the grassroots to
secure an MLA from their region.
He further emphasised the need for party reorganization, if
necessary, by focusing on the larger interest of the party. He concluded by
saying that a well-planned strategy would determine Congress' success in the
upcoming elections.
Report stated that during an event in Dimapur, Taliyanger,
retired additional director of Rural Development, formally joined the Congress
party.
The events were chaired by Namrachang Hegui, president of
Peren DCC, and Kumjimong, general secretary of Dimapur DCC, in Jalukie and
Dimapur respectively.
