Dimapur, September 29 : With local body elections in Nagaland round the corner, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has asked the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) to seriously prepare and contest the elections at all levels.
In a statement today, AICC secretary and in charge of Nagaland, Dr K Jayakumar said the local body elections in Nagaland may be announced anytime by the Government. He said the Congress Party will consider this as an opportunity to consolidate its position in this election.
As a grassroots level party in Nagaland, the Congress should get in touch with the people, assess their requirements and accordingly prepare for the elections, Jayakumar stated.
“It is time for our leaders and cadres to expose the ineffective administration in Nagaland. All the civic amenities are at their lowest level and these issues can be addressed only by the elected representatives of the local bodies,” he added.
Meanwhile, NPCC president K Therie, in a separate release, maintained that as the civic body election has a special future for the people of Nagaland, it will be the “litmus test of clean election that has failed in the past”.
“Once again voters on their own shall choose between corrupt and god-fearing governance at the level of Municipals and Town Councils,” Therie said.
The NPCC chief assured that the Congress Party will offer “god-fearing clean candidates” for good governance. “We shall also offer election manifestoes separately for all Municipal and Town Councils underlining the future and with assurances to deliver,” he said.
Stating that Nagaland needs decent and disciplined urban local bodies, he urged all rank and file of Congress to prepare to fight the elections to urban local bodies. He also sought the support and cooperation of all likeminded citizens in providing decent and disciplined urban local bodies.
