Media experts advocate responsible AI use and fact-checking at journalism workshop organised by DIPR in Imphal

IMPHAL — Speakers at a workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism on Wednesday stressed the need for responsible use of AI and rigorous fact-checking, saying technological tools should complement rather than replace journalistic ethics and verification.
The remarks were made during a half-day workshop on Application of AI in Journalism and Media Fact-Checking held at the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) premises in Imphal.
Highlighting the rapid growth of digital media platforms, speakers noted that information now reaches the public almost instantly through mobile phones and online platforms, creating both opportunities and challenges for journalists.
Addressing the gathering, Secretary (IPR) Hungyo Worshang said AI should be viewed as a tool that can support and strengthen journalism, even though it is often perceived as a competitor.
Referring to the growing use of AI in the media sector, he said technological advancements cannot be resisted and that media professionals must learn to effectively manage and utilise emerging technologies. He noted that AI can assist journalists in areas such as data analysis, information verification and content production.
Worshang, however, emphasised that information generated by AI must always be verified and fact-checked before being disseminated to the public.
Speaking on the objective of the workshop, Director of Information and Public Relations Dr Th Charanjeet Singh said the programme was organised to enhance and update participants' understanding of AI applications in journalism and media.
Stressing the importance of responsible AI use in the evolving media landscape, Head of the Department of Computer Science at Manipur Technical University, Dr H Saratchandra, elaborated on the role of AI in news gathering, content creation and information dissemination.
Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Cube Ten Technologies, Dr H Joyremba, addressed common misconceptions surrounding AI technologies and explained their practical applications across various sectors.
Academic Head of the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Dr Angom Buboo Singh, demonstrated how AI-driven tools can enhance newsroom efficiency, streamline content production and assist journalists in verifying information to ensure accuracy and credibility in reporting.
Journalists from various media organisations, government officials and media professionals attended the workshop.
