Dimapur, June 18 (EMN): Ahthibung Region Club (ARC), in collaboration with Primary Health Centre (PHC), Ahthibung, conducted an awareness programme for the youth in Phelang village under Peren district on June 18. The awareness programme was primarily focussed to dissuade the youth from early marriage.
In an updates, ARC vice chairman, Henpu Kuki, stated that many young mothers – mostly just grownup teens- turned up for the programme. Henpu remarked that they were too young to uphold the responsibilities of motherhood. He added that maximum participants were school dropouts and doesn’t have any sustainable livelihoods. Stating that they are starting their life on wrong foot, he expressed apprehension that many of them would face medical, economic, and social generated hurdles.
Henpu spoke on the demerits of early marriage.
Dr. Vezokholu Khamo from PHC Ahthibung gave a talk on the importance of family planning and advantages of small families.
The occasion was also utilised to provide medical cover to villagers and vaccination to 0-5 year kids.
Altogether, 67 villagers were treated and given vaccination including 32 children. On the spot malaria tests were also conducted by PHC Ahthibung team.
Meanwhile, the village authorities have applauded the efforts taken by ARC and PHC, Ahthibung, for the village. ARC expressed desire to conduct more of such awareness drives for youth on the ill effects of early marriage.
