DIMAPUR — With an objective to create awareness and encourage farmers to adopt millet cultivation in the district, Agriculture department conducted a training-cum-exhibition on May 23 held in the office of the District Agriculture Officer (DAO), Dimapur.
An update from the Agriculture department stated that Dr. Lowrence Kithan, resource person and scientist (Agronomy) and AICRP on pigeonpea at NU: SASRD, highlighted on the importance, nutritional value and the recommended package of practices for millets. He also stated that millets could help tackle challenges of food security as they did not require much care compared to other crops and had less water consumption rate.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=1]Also speaking at the programme, L Mhao Lotha, DAO Dimapur, elaborated on the nutritional and health benefits of millets. He stated that training and workshops are being organised not only in Nagaland but in the entire country as the year 2023 has been declared by the United Nations as the International Year of Millets. He also reminded that millets are ancient grains that mankind has known for centuries.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Arenjungla, SDAO, and invocation prayer was said by Yentsao, AI.

After the programme, farmers were provided with inputs such as quality seeds of foxtail millets and millet folders. Around 40 farmers participated in the event.
Report further stated that different varieties of millets and cook millet items were exhibited during the programme.
