Agriculture department embraces IT to connect with farmers

To provide responsive and effective administration and to create a platform for the welfare of farmers and the farming-based communities through the use of Information and Technology (IT), the Nagaland department of Agriculture had signed a memorandum of understanding with IT solutions provider M/s Ramietech Solutions in Kohima to develop, set up, and operate and manage the Nagaland State Agriculture Portal (SAP).

According to updates stated by the department of Agriculture in its annual report for 2019-2020, the ultimate goal of the SAP is to use IT as a medium to provide an effective interactive platform for government-to-farmers, farmer-to-businesses, and government-to-citizens interactive interface.

The SAP is part of the national e-Governance plan in Agriculture (NeGP-A ) programme which is a component of the submission on agricultural extension (Smae) under the National Mission on Agricultural Extension and Technology (NMAET).

NeGP-A was first introduced during the later phase of the 11th Five Year Plan, to achieve rapid development of agriculture in India through the use of ICT, and furthered strengthened in the 12th Plan.

In the annual report, the department stated that the SAP would provide a secure and individualised view of multiple online resources and interactive services. It stated that the SAP would become an interface among the department, the farmers and the farming-based community, besides working to attract buyers from across the globe for businesses as this will provide a common platform all with a single click of a button.

The department’s report pointed out the work for the implementation of the SAP has already begun and will be live within 10 months from the date of the signing of the memorandum.
