Dimapur, May 6 (EMN): The Agriculture Technology Management Agency (Atma) of Khonsa block in Kiphire district hosted a training and demonstration programme focusing on the subject of low-cost water harvesting in hilly regions, during May 3-5 at various places namely Khonsa town, Thanamir, and Salomi villages. 90 farmers participated in the training programme.
The resource person for the training was Benjongtoshi, updates informed. He spoke about the importance of water harvesting during the monsoon season. He talked to the participants about the steps involved in the ‘jalkund’ method of water harvesting, which can be practiced by farmers to tackle water scarcity during dry seasons.
Also, another resource person Takutoshi Jamir demonstrated inter-cropping methods in cultivating maize, beans, and pumpkin, besides pruning in apple farming, the updates informed. He highlighted the importance of adopting an inter-cropping method commonly called the ‘three sisters’ cultivation.’
Further, coinciding with the ‘Kishan Kalyan Karyashalas,’ the Atma of Tening block in Peren conducted training session about mushroom cultivation, in Tening town on May 2. Resource person Pezavitso Haralu, gave a demonstration about the technical aspects of mushroom cultivation.
Members of the department of Horticulture and Veterinary and Animal Husbandry conducted a technical session besides offering vaccination for livestock.
In Tuensang, the Atma of Sangsangyu block conducted a training programme at Buthenbuo and Khuthei village on April 27 and the 28th, with Mayangthemba and Neilhouvo as the resource persons for the event, updates informed.
Mayangthemba demonstrated cultivation techniques and practices that are employed in ginger, potato, and disease management of seasonal crops. Farmers were taught about the methods of seed treatment, land preparation, spacing, mulching, and crop rotation.
A practical training about the application of ‘neem’ seed kernel extracts and bordeaux mixture were also imparted during the event, it was informed.
Further, a training programme about rearing poultry and preventing poultry diseases was given by Neilhouvo. Procedures and techniques required for proper preparation of brooder houses, feeding, and sanitation and hygiene, management practices, and effective preventive methods were imparted, the update stated.
