Aggrieved Hindi teachers calls for indefinite protest

Kohima, March 16: With no response from the government even on the second day of its third phase agitation, All Nagaland Hindi Teachers Union (ANHTU) and CSS Hindi teachers have announced to undertake an indefinite agitation from tomorrow beginning from 9 a.m. at the Nagaland Civil Secretariat till it receives a written assurance from the government to clear the pending salaries.
In a letter to the Principal Secretary of School Education, ANHTU cautioned that ‘if something happens to the teachers during the agitation from the government side, the government will be fully held responsible for the act.’
Earlier in the afternoon, Education Secretary came to meet the teachers at 3:16 p.m. and offered to clear two-month salary for the time being and the remaining to be cleared by the next month. However, when the teachers asked for a written assurance, the Secretary failed to comply with the demand and forced the teachers to decline the offer.
A near possible violent confrontation between the agitators and security personnel was averted in the morning as the teachers lined up on both sides of the Civil Secretary gates and restricted passage of vehicles. The agitators raised their banners and placards to the passing vehicles shouting, ‘Have pity on the Hindi teachers,’ ‘Release our salaries’ etc.
It was informed that the chief minister, Dr Shürhozelie, who reached Kohima today, had convened an emergency cabinet meeting on March 17 at 10 a.m. to discuss on issue of the agitating teachers.
