Kohima, September 28: “The world has become a global village due to advancement in science.” This poignant remark was made by Dr Imtiwapang Aier, Parliamentary Secretary for Geology and Mining, the chief guest at the two-day UGC-sponsored National Seminar on Interdisciplinary Research in Chemical Sciences (NSIRCS) organised by the department of Chemistry, Kohima Science College (Autonomous), Jotsoma in collaboration with Directorate of Higher Education today.
Commenting on the event which is the first ever of its kind organised by a college in Nagaland at a National Level, Imtiwapang said the seminar will have a critical societal impact on the development and prosperity of our country. He stated that, “Much of the progress that human kind has made till now, is associated with science.” He added that this interdisciplinary approach which aims to amalgamate different streams into a single block will be useful for the development and management of mankind and particularly for the people of North East which will bring inclusive growth in the region. The seminar serves as a platform for eminent scientist, researchers, technologists and students from both outside and within the state, the exchange of views, ideas and findings will play a vital role of interdisciplinary research in Chemical Sciences for humanity. Citing advancement of the research growth of chemistry in nano-technology, the chief guest said it has led to diverse applications such as delivering drugs to specific cells, repairing damaged human tissue, enabling efficiency of solar energy and others.
Acknowledging the severe repercussions of inputs from science and technology like the Bhopal Gas Tragedy and the Chernobyl accidents in Soviet Union, Imtiwapang stressed that regulating systems should keep pace with the applications of chemistry. Furthermore he added that chemical management law must be up-dated to adapt to scientific advancements and that seminar as such will attempt to bring innovative ideas to meaningful knowledge and discoveries.
Prof. RH Duncan Lyngdoh delivered the key note address at the seminar by presenting a brief overview on Metal-Metal bonds in transition metal chemistry. The chairperson of the seminar was Kenneth Punyu, Assistant Prof (Chemistry), welcome speech given by Shiv Kumar Mishra, Convenor, NCIRCS, addresses by Dr I Anungla Aier, Principal of KSCJ and vote of thanks was given by Dr T Tiakaba Jamir, organizing secretary, NSIRCS-2016.
