KOHIMA — Adinno Phizo, president of the Naga National Council (NNC), was laid to rest at Dzütsie in her native Khonoma village on Saturday, following a funeral service in Kohima attended by representatives of tribal organisations, student bodies and other groups.
Phizo, 94, died at a private hospital in Kohima on October 8 while undergoing treatment for age-related health complications.
Mourners paid their last respects and offered floral tributes at the Angami Baptist Church Council (ABCC) Mission Compound in Kohima, where speakers remembered her leadership, political convictions and role in carrying forward the legacy of her father, AZ Phizo.
Angami Public Organisation president Thejao Vihienuo said her life was marked by perseverance and an unwavering commitment to her principles. At a time when political leadership in Naga society was largely dominated by men, he said, she demonstrated that leadership was determined by conviction rather than gender.

“She was a leader who did not shy away from difficult decisions, and her uncompromising approach earned her both devoted supporters and determined critics. Yet, regardless of political differences, few could deny the force of her personality or the profound impact she had on Naga politics. Adinno Phizo was a woman of firm beliefs who stood resolutely by her convictions,” he said.
Chakhesang Public Organisation president Vezuhu Keyho remembered her as a “true daughter of the Naga nation”, describing her as a source of inspiration during turbulent times.

He said the torch entrusted to her had been held high under her leadership, as she remained steadfast in upholding the ideology and vision of the NNC and the principles of the Naga national government. He urged people to emulate her and remain true to the principles upheld by earlier generations.
Naga Students’ Federation president Mteisuding said her death marked the end of a remarkable chapter in Naga history. After assuming leadership of the NNC following her father’s death in 1990, she had carried forward its historical and political legacy for more than three decades, he said.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Jasazzo Phizo recalled his relationship with his eldest sister and expressed gratitude to those who had stood by the family following her death.
He recalled that Adinno had once explained that she had continued as NNC president not because she wanted the position, but because she felt duty-bound to hold it. Jasazzo said he had come to understand the weight of that responsibility later.
