IMPHAL — The BJP's nominee for the 2026 Rajya Sabha biennial elections from Manipur, Adhikarimayum Sarda Devi, was elected unopposed on Thursday.
Returning Officer Sapam Rohit, who is also the secretary of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, officially handed over the certificate of election at the Assembly premises in Imphal on Thursday, which was the last date for withdrawal of candidature for the biennial elections.
Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam was also present on the occasion.
Sarda Devi, who is the president of the BJP Manipur unit, had filed her nomination papers for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Manipur at the Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretariat on June 8, virtually clearing the path for an unopposed election.
On June 4, the BJP had named its state unit president, Adhikarimayum Sarda Devi, as its candidate for the 2026 Rajya Sabha biennial elections from Manipur.
Sarda Devi was appointed as the first woman president of the BJP Manipur unit in 2021.
Manipur's lone Rajya Sabha member, Leishemba Sanajaoba, will complete his current term on June 21. He had first assumed office in June 2020.
The Congress candidate, Abdul Salam, was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Manipur in 2014.
Earlier, the Opposition Congress party had decided not to field its candidate for the election to the state's lone Rajya Sabha seat as the party has only five MLAs in the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly and did not have the required strength to contest the election.
