ADC Pfutsero urges vigil on African swine flu

Dimapur, May 9 (EMN): Following reports on the outbreak of African swine flu (ASF) in Phek and Kiphire districts, the additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Pfutsero has informed the public to remain vigilant and report any unusual mortality of domestic pigs and feral pigs to the office of assistant veterinary surgeon, Pfutsero.

The ADC has issued a notification to the public and pig farmers of Pfutsero sub-division in order to control and contain the spread of the contagious disease. It mentioned that ASF is highly infectious and contagious hemorrhagic viral disease of pigs and 100% fatal with no treatment and vaccine.

It added that control, containment, surveillance and following of bio-security measures are the only way to eradicate the disease. It, therefore, urged the village councils, public, pig farmers to immediately report unusual dead of pigs to the nearest veterinary health centres.

The notification further stated that the assistant veterinary surgeon of Pfutsero would monitor the situation and create awareness to contain the spread of African swine flu.
