Dimapur, April 27
The governor of Nagaland PB Acharya has advised the people of Nagaland to start taking tree plantation seriously for the fact that their depletion points to the fact that humankind is ‘playing’ with and disturbing the health of the earth.
The governor said that Nagaland was an ‘earthquake prone area’ and even this year ‘we already had experienced several earthquakes,’ he said during a recent community event in Wokha.
This is happening, he explained, “Because we are playing with the earth and disturbing the system all these years and now our mountains and forest are barren.”
Acharaya, who was speaking during the Lotha Eloe Hoho Summit at Wokha on April 22 in Wokha, said women can play a very “strong role in controlling and containing this problem and save our environment.” They can start by encouraging the community to plant more trees as they were the ‘lungs’ of the earth.
‘We have to do away with ‘jhum’ (slash-and-burn farming) cultivation and plant more trees and save the earth.’ He said. Or else, he added, ‘suffocate the earth and kill ourselves.’
