Dimapur, Dec. 7 (EMN): Asserting that corruption has “totally ruined the socio-economic and the moral fabric of Naga society”, Acaut Nagaland on Saturday called for more power to the Nagaland Lokayukta.
In a statement, the anti-corruption group maintained that even though it is nearly a year since Lokayukta was established, its 'complete formation has yet to be done'.
It demanded that Nagaland Lokayukta be empowered to select the remaining Upa-Lokayukta of his choice so that he may have his team to take on the difficult task of tackling corruption in Nagaland.
“Since Nagaland is a small and close-knitted society, tackling cases of corruption is often compromised; thus the Lokayukta must comprise of composite police cadre, from paramilitary forces, CBI and Assam Rifles to conduct covert operations and raids without being compromised,” read the statement.
Also, it demanded revocation of an amendment made to the Lokayukta Bill on February 23, which states: “In all case where there are difficulties experienced in the implementation of this Act, provisions in this Act and the rules made there under shall be relaxed to the extent desirable by the Chief Minister.”
This, according to the group, has emasculated the Lokayukta “and defeats the very purpose it has been created for”.
