Science remains the backbone of humankind’s endeavour to reach the farthest regions of growth and progress. Every modern individual can see the impact of science in every sphere of life every day, be it in use, be it in disuse. It is not merely cars and factories or electric lights or modern buildings, the internet or the radio and cinema, but in the working of technology and human engagement with their use to have a better life. Everything is connected with science.
National Science Day was observed at the government higher secondary school of Wokha on March 31. A formal program to mark the day was conducted in the school.
National Science Day is being celebrated every year to widely spread a message about the significance of scientific applications in the daily life of the people. The objectives are to display all the activities, efforts and achievements in the field of science for human welfare; discuss all the issues and implement new technologies for the development of the science; give an opportunity to the scientific minded citizens in the country; encourage the people as well as popularize the science and technology.Sub divisional education officer of Wokha T Chonbenthung Lotha was the guest of honour of the event. The programme was sponsored by the department of Science and Technology. The event was conducted with the theme “Raise public appreciation on scientific issues for the development of nation.”
In his speech during the event, the guest of honour encouraged the gathering about “the importance of scientific knowledge” and issues in today’s fast advancing world. Lotha also urge the students to be disciplined and hardworking in their studies to achieve their goals.
Epibeni Abigal M Kikon of Libemo Memorial School, Longshibeni K Patton of Gilgal High School and Mharhomo of Libemo Memorial School were adjudged the first, second and third prize winners of a science competition the school conducted.
National science day is celebrated as one of the main science festivals in India every year during which students of the schools and colleges demonstrate various science projects and national and state science institutions demonstrate their latest researches. The celebration also includes public speeches, radio-TV talk shows, science movies, science exhibitions based on themes and concepts, watching the night sky, live projects, research demonstration, debates, quiz competitions, lectures, science model exhibitions and many more activities.
It is celebrated with immense passion by Radio Astronomy Centre (RAC), Ooty and Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) at Khodad, Pune, Maharashtra which are world-famous telescopes that are operated at low radio frequencies by the NCRA (National Centre for Radio Astrophysics) established by the TIFR (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research) under the umbrella of DAE.
A variety of activities is organized by the RAC and GMRT at the ceremony of National Science Day celebration in order to recognize their leading research activities in the field of radio astronomy and astrophysics. Variety of programmes is also held for the public and the student community in order to popularize science and technology in the country.
