Dimapur, March 10 (EMN): Rural communities and urban economics will not function if issues confronting rural women and girls are not addressed, law students attending a recent International Women’s Day programme in Kohima were told.
Professor in-charge of Kohima Law College Kezhokhoto Savi was quoted in a press release on Friday as having addressed the International Women’s Day programme at Kohima Law College in Kohima on March 8.
The programme was observed with the theme “Time is now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives,” it was informed. He was quoted as having said that rural communities and urban economics would not function without first addressing the issues confronting rural women and girls.
Further, the speaker was said to have told the gathering that educating a man was ‘educating an individual but educating woman is educating the society.’ He said that without uplifting rural women and girls, rural communities and urban economics will not function, the press release explained.
Women and girls lack access to customary assets, education, healthcare and other essential services, he said. Because of inequality and discrimination, Savi added, rural women fare much worse than rural men or urban women.
Assistant Professors Tongpok Pongener and Limanochet Jamir and a student from each semester spoke during the occasion, the updates informed. They acknowledged the contribution of women to nation-building, the updates stated. The speakers also stressed on the issue of gender parity, it was informed.
Legal authorities commemorate women’s day
The Dimapur District Legal Services Authority observed International Women’s Day in collaboration with Assisi Centre for Integrated Development (ACID) and NDWM with the theme, “Time is now: Rural and urban activities transforming lives”, on March 10 at Assisi Auditorium, Lake View colony in Dimapur.
The chief guest for the programme, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary DDLSA Ajongba Imchen emphasised the need of the hour to speak up, safeguard and uphold women’s rights.
Resource person, panel lawyer Sentimenla gave presentation on ‘Protection of Women From Domestic Violence Act 2005.’
Also, Zunheboto Distirct Legal Services Authority commemorated the International Women’s Day at South Point East Prayer Fellowship in Zunheboto on March 8.
Resource person Easter H Yepthomi spoke on the significance of Women’s Day and briefed special laws enacted for women, while para legal volunteer, Rebecca Chophy highlighted about the Legal aid and legal services.
