As the first team in the world to successfully defend the T20 Cricket World Cup, India has demonstrated its dominance in this format of the game. The victory is even sweeter this time, as India has fielded a relatively young team under new leadership--captain and coach--after senior players like Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, along with coach Rahul Dravid decided to bid goodbye to the shorter version of the game. To fill the void created by the departure of these stalwarts was not an easy task. But barring a few hiccups here and there, the team management has managed to keep the winning momentum going. In this context, it must be mentioned that India has not lost a single ICC tournament or series since 2023, highlighting the country's strong bench strength. There are several cricketers who can be match winners on their day.
Two teams namely West India and Australia dominated world cricket during the seventies and nineties but their fortunes declined following the retirement of some star cricketers. For instance, West Indies is yet to find suitable replacements for their renowned pace quartet of Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Joel Garner, and Malcolm Marshall, who could dismantle even the strongest batting line-ups. They are also still in search of a formidable batter like the legendary Viv Richards. On the other hand, Australia built a formidable team in the late-eighties and the nineties under coach Bobby Simpson, but the present team is a pale shadow of the yester years' ‘baggy green’ and could not even qualify for the Super-8 stage of the recently concluded T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, Indian team wasn’t affected by the departure of big hitters like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. This makes all the difference.
Now, India faces the challenge of maintaining the momentum with a similarly formidable team, as some members of the current squad are unlikely to play in the next edition of the T20 World Cup. Cricketers like Surya Kumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, and Jasprit Bumrah may not be a part of India’s T20 team for long. The team management must ensure a smooth transition and cautious while picking up replacements, should any of the team members decide to retire. Frequent chopping and changing of cricketers will do more harm than good to the team. Cricketers should be given enough time to prove their mettle as international and domestic cricket are different ball games. For instance, Sanju Samson didn’t get chance to play even a single match in the previous world cup. This time, he played three remarkable innings when given the chance, which not only helped India secure the World Cup but also demonstrated his value. India's task ahead is to build a strong team by providing ample opportunities to all available talent.
