Kohima, June 2 (EMN): A man was caught by members of the Jotsoma Youth Organisation (JYO) for intimidating people and extorting money on a national highway, near the Jostsoma by-pass road in the early hours of June 2 in Kohima.
Confirming this to Eastern Mirror, the JYO's president Khrieto Peseyie said that the person was caught around 5-6 am on June 2 when some of its members went for inspection after reports of drivers being intimidated and extorted.
Peseyie said that the accused had threatened drivers by brandishing a knife and extorting money and mobile phones etc. When its members went down to inspect the area there was a tanker with the driver missing who was suspected to have left in a hurry with all his belongings in the vehicle.
As the members lay in wait, he said that the accused was caught when he came up from below the road and was trying to escape in a taxi. Some mobile phones and a cash of INR 20,000 were seized from his possession, it was informed. Peseyie said that the mobile phones were handed over to the owners after making calls.
The accused, he informed, was later handed over to Zubza Police Station.
Three persons caught at Mezoma village
In another incident, three non-Nagas pretending to be from the Medical department trying to offer medical check up to villagers were caught in Mezoma village this morning by alert villagers.
Confirming this news, Mezoma Youth Organisation's (MYO) advisor Megolhoutuo Hieme said there had been instances when some unidentified people had come to the village posing as medical personnel 'trying to fool the gullible villagers.'
In this regard, he said that the people had been vigilant about unknown persons coming into the village when parents are out in the fields and children are left at home.
Another official of the organisation, Mhiesilie Rhitso however denied the news doing the rounds in the social media. Clarifying the ‘exaggerated viral news,’ Rhitso said a girl became alarmed when the three persons asked for the residence of the chairman. They were caught by youths as they alighted from the taxi, it was informed.
Enquired about the purpose of their visit and on being asked to produce identify cards, Aadhaar cards etc., he said they didn’t possess any 'which confirmed suspicions.'
Later they, along with the taxi driver, were handed over to Zubza Police station. Attempts to contact the police station for more details about both the cases proved futile.
